National French Fry Day set for July 13

Stop into Wings Etc. to pair straight or curly fries with your favorite dish

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (July 9, 2021)— Baked, mashed, or fried, the potato is one of the most versatile side dishes in the world, and annually on July 13, the nation comes together to celebrate one of the best forms in which a potato can be presented: the French fry.

While the name “French fry” might lead one to believe the crispy, fried fritters were first made in France, there is a debate between the French and Belgians on who should be credited for creating the golden-brown sticks.

Belgians claim that they have been making fries since the 1600s when fish-deprived villagers would fry and eat potatoes in the winter while the River Meuse was iced over. On the other hand, the French claim the fried concoction came about in the 1700s when street vendors sold fried potatoes to citizens who needed affordable food just before the French Revolution.

While the debate continues regarding who should get the credit for creating French fries, there was a clear winner on naming rights. Thanks to a shared language between the French and the Belgians, Americans who were stationed in southern Belgium in WWI, where the dominant language is French, began popularizing the term “French fry.”

Thanks to their popularity among Americans in Europe, eventually, the fries made their way across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States, where they have now become a favorite side dish to hot dogs, burgers, wings, and more.

Today, fries come in many shapes and sizes. This July 13, celebrate National French Fry Day with straight or curly fries at Wings Etc., where fries are cooked to a perfect crispy golden brown. To add an extra bit of goodness, order them loaded with nacho cheese, sour cream, and bacon bits.
